Our Story

Founded on March 1, 1871, with just 19 dedicated members, the Phoenix Volunteer Fire Department has proudly served the Hollidaysburg community for over 150 years. Incorporated on May 4, 1871, our all-volunteer department—known as Blair County Fire Station 10—has evolved into a modern emergency response team. Today, we operate a fleet of four vehicles, responding to approximately 500 calls annually, including fires, medical emergencies, and public service incidents. Our enduring commitment to protecting lives and property reflects a legacy of courage, service, and community spirit.

As we continue to grow and adapt with the times, one thing remains unchanged—our commitment to serving the people of Hollidaysburg. Whether you’re interested in volunteering, donating, or learning more about fire safety, we invite you to be a part of our story. Together, we can keep our community strong and safe.

Our Mission & Approach

With every call we answer, our mission stays the same: protecting lives through fast response, clear communication, and calm under pressure.

We take a proactive approach—not just waiting for emergencies, but working to prevent them. From regular equipment checks to live training drills, every member is prepared for the unexpected. We also partner with local schools, businesses, and event organizers to promote fire safety and readiness across the community.

This isn’t just a department—it’s a team of neighbors looking out for one another, fueled by commitment and community pride.

Pamphlet from the 1967 anniversary of the Hollidaysburg Fire Departments New Building

A Little History

On October 15, 1967 the fire department dedicated their new and current building on Wayne Street a major upgrade from their former Montgomery Street location dating to 1902.
Did you know that at one time Hollidaysburg Borough had multiple separate volunteer fire departments? The Goodwill, Allegheny and Phoenix!

Founded on March 1, 1871 with 19 members and incorporated on May 4, 1871 the Phoenix    Volunteer Fire Department has been serving Hollidaysburg for 150+ years! The first horse drawn steam fire engine was purchased for $2,025 and used from 1871 to 1914 when it was replaced by the first motorized fire engine.  In 1928 the first pumper was purchased.

The first station for the Phoenix was at 413 Montgomery Street and dated to the 1870s. That wood frame building was destroyed during a large town fire on May 31, 1902. It was rebuilt on the same location that year of brick. That building housed the fire department until the current fire hall was dedicated on October 15, 1967 at 206 Wayne Street at a cost of $95,000.

Photos of the buildings and equipment plus original 1967 Dedication Booklet all part of the large collection of Hollidaysburg items at our Hollidaysburg Museum. For more local history please remember to Follow us on Facebook at Historic Hollidaysburg, Inc.

This was posted from Historic Hollidaysburg, Inc. on Facebook in 2021 to celebrate 54 years of us in our current building.
